The character of Aelindur, daughter of Sauron, was created (without any RPG intentions) in 1989 by my friend Kathrin Vestergren. I suggested that Aelindur would go into hiding in the East without being identified by the Lords of the Free Peoples, only to return from exile in a later Age to avenge her father’s defeat.

The following adventure is based upon one suggested in the MERP Module : Rogues of the Borderlands (#8014), P. 35, Section 11.3 The Mines of Belegost with the addition of the following background information and attached materials.
The suggested time for this adventure is between the years of FA 300–320 (this allows for the passing of the few hundred years, at the on set of the Fourth Age, which are necessary for the mines of the Lower Halls to re-emerge).
Briefly, a group of adventures is hired to journey deep into a section of long lost mine to discover the fate of a missing group of surveyors and recover (if possible) some ancient artifacts (which were lost there a long time ago when the mines were first flooded and then abandoned).

The First Age was a turbulent time throughout all of Middle Earth. Morgoth unleashed horrors beyond imagination upon the denizens of Middle Earth. The Elves and the Valar fought him until finally he was defeated in the far away Angband in the frozen north-western part of Middle Earth.

In ancient days, a tribe of men heard rumour that the Shining Folk waged war against the evil that lived in the Northern Wastes beyond the ice-capped, razor-sharp ridges of the Ramparts of Pain. They left their homes in the Uttermost East and migrated westwards, driving ever onwards to find the land by the Setting Sun where they might find allies stronger than themselves to drive back the Lord of Darkness in the North.
Long they traveled under the wise leadership of the patriarch of their folk, the powerful warrior named Bëoac. Despite the insignificance of their numbers, the Darkness in the North took heed of their rebellion and sent a host of his demon-spawn, the foul Barghûn.

A Lord of the Rings RPG Adventure for 3–6 low-advancement characters
by Joel P. Shempert.
This is an adventure designed for beginning characters, approx. 0–2 advancements. It can be a stand-alone scenario or the lead-in to a Chronicle of long-term exploits and epic struggle. It is set in the fractured Realm of Arnor in the Autumn of T.A. 1407.

One night my wife wanted to play a game. I had no ideas for a scenario, but suddenly inspiration struck : having just read Robin Laws’ damn excellent book, « Robin’s Laws Of Good Gamemastering », I came up with a plan.

The « sandbox » setting, in which players are not only allowed but encouraged to make their own fun by exploring and interacting with the setting, is, in my opinion, a fundamental requirement for satisfying, rewarding D&D play. Adventures and setting that force players along certain paths — or worse, away from certain paths — cannot hold a candle to sandbox play.
